The European Union (EU) proposed this Wednesday to add to the list of individual sanctions pro-Russian officials in the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, occupied by Russia.
We propose the adoption of additional restrictive measures against people who support, facilitate or benefit from the invasion of Ukraine,” said the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, in a press release.
In the first place, as specified by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the restrictive measures will cover “the authorities representing Russia in Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia”.
The sanctions, which include an asset freeze and a travel ban to the EU, have yet to be applied. “to the Russians who organized and facilitated these shameful referendums in the four occupied Ukrainian territories”the rep added.
Borrell also highlighted that this Wednesday’s proposal -in reaction to the recent referendums on the accession to the Russian Federation of these occupied territories- will sanction Russian officials linked to the defense sector, such as the minister responsibleand still the suppliers of military equipment to Russiaincluding missiles and fighter jets, as well as participants in Moscow’s announced mobilization process of 300,000 reservists.
The new sanctions package also targets spreaders of misinformation and donors of funds to Moscow-occupied areas, according to Brussels.
The European Commission has proposed an eighth package of sanctions against Russia, given the “new escalation” of the Kremlin (Russian Presidency) in its aggression against Ukraine, with the celebration of “fraudulent referendums”, partial mobilizations and the threat of resorting to nuclear weapons
The new package of EU sanctions, presented this Wednesday in Brussels by the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the High Representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, includes a ceiling on the price of Russian oil, new restrictions on trade to deprive Russia of some €7 billion in revenue, a ban on exporting more products to deprive the Kremlin of key technologies for its defense industry, and an update to the list of individuals and entities subject to restrictive measures.
