On day 220 of the war, the Russian soldiers who were besieged in Lyman left the city after a Ukrainian counteroffensive. Moscow forces admitted that the region, which is a key supply point for Donetsk, had been recaptured by Ukraine.
Lyman had been, until Saturday, a major rail junction, key outpost and major logistics hub for Russian forces fighting in eastern Ukraine. The Political newspaper explains that the loss of this city further damage Moscow supply linesat a time when Ukraine is intensifying its counter-offensive in the east of the country.
“Lyman is important because it is the next step towards the liberation of the Ukrainian Donbass,” said Serhii Cherevatyi. The spokesman for the Ukrainian forces also stressed that the reconquest of the city is “an opportunity to go further, to Kreminna and Severodonetsk, and psychologically it is very important.”
On the Ukrainian side, Yuriy Sak, adviser to the Ukrainian Defense Minister, stressed that the counteroffensive was “a considerable success.” In turn, the Russia admitted that the Ukrainian offensive was superior “in strength and means”. With the Russian acknowledgment of the defeat of its forces in the city of Lyman, the leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, came out to defend that Moscow should consider the use of nuclear weapons of limited range in Ukraine.
