Brazilian police register 474 electoral crimes, but voting takes place in a calm environment

Brazil registered 474 electoral crimes, according to the latest Federal Police bulletin released by the country’s Ministry of Justice, this Sunday, when 156 million voters participate in a vote that takes place in a peaceful environment.

According to a bulletin from the Superior Electoral Court, 1,420 electronic voting machines had to be replaced throughout the country. The number represents 0.27% of the total ballot boxes used.

According to a report released by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security around 12:30 p.m. (local time), of this total, 76 of the occurrences were ‘exit cases’, 115 cases of vote buying, 9 attempted rapes of votes, 16 cases of irregular transport and 65 crimes committed in the polling stations.

The same document indicated that nine weapons were seized, 184 people were arrested, as well as 1.9 million reais (360,000 euros) in cash that was allegedly used to buy votes.

One of the latest cases of vote buying occurred in the north of the country, in the state of Amapá, where a person was detained near a voting center with a large amount of money.

In the midst of this tense scenario due to the polarization between supporters of the current president and candidate for re-election Jair Bolsonaro, and supporters of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers’ Party (PT), the president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) , Alexandre de Moraes, told reporters after the vote in São Paulo that the day was “calm and safe.”
