After 6 years… an American “detainee” leaves Tehran with a “problem”.

After 6 years of imprisonment in Iranian prisons, Baqer Namazi, an 85-year-old Iranian-American citizen, arrived and took over the plane and left Iran.

It seemed that the old man could hardly climb the stairs due to his health condition and old age.

The spokesperson of the US State Department confirmed to AFP today that Namazi was allowed to leave and his imprisoned son was also released, confirming what the United Nations had previously announced.

This spokesperson also explained that “Namazi’s child, who was unjustly detained, was also allowed to leave the prison.”

He added: Baqir Namazi was unjustly arrested and after serving his sentence, he was not allowed to leave the country despite repeated requests for immediate investigation.

He continued: We know that lifting the curfew and releasing his son is related to his medical conditions.

Meanwhile, according to Oman News Agency, the Sultanate of Oman announced that the American citizen was transferred to Muscat to prepare for his return to his country.

Last week, the United Nations announced that Baqir was allowed to leave the country for medical treatment, and his son, who had been detained in Tehran, was released after a request by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

It is worth noting that Baqir, a former United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) official, was arrested in February 2016 when he went to Tehran to seek the release of his son Siamak, an Iranian-American businessman who was arrested on charges in October 2015. of espionage

This father and son were sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of espionage in October 2015. While this 85-year-old father was exempted from serving his sentence in 2020, he could not leave the country despite health problems.

While the United States has lobbied for the two men’s release along with other Americans as part of efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and Western powers, Emad Sharqi, an investor who was jailed for ten years for espionage Sentenced to prison. And Murad Tahbaz, who is also a British citizen, was temporarily released.

Over the past few days, Tehran has claimed that the detainees were released after the release of the funds that were kept abroad for it, but Washington completely rejected these accusations.

It is worth noting that Iran has frozen tens of billions of dollars due to the sanctions that former US President Donald Trump reimposed in 2018 after unilaterally withdrawing from the international agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program concluded in 2015.
