Ukraine announced on Friday the “symbolic” reopening of the rail link between the capital, kyiv, and Kherson, a week after the withdrawal of Russian troops from that important city in the south of the country.
“The first trip will take place today at 22:14 [locais, 20h14 em Lisboa]with the train leaving the capital, arriving in Kherson around 9:00 am [locais, 07h00 em Lisboa]???????? About 200 passengers should still be on board”, said a local railway official, Serguiï Khlan, through the social network Facebook.
Confirming the reopening of the line, Natalia Tourtchak, spokesperson for the Ukrainian railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, stressed, however, that the measure is “symbolic”, since there are no tickets available to buy seats for the next few days.
“At the moment, it’s just a train. Then we’ll see if it becomes a regular line.” of the Ukrainian railway network, Tourtchak told Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency.
Since the troops’ departure from Moscow a week ago, kyiv has said it regrets the “atrocities” it says it has witnessed in the area, including numerous alleged cases of torture committed by the Russian army during the eight-month occupation of Kherson.
“The Russians not only killed and mined the region, but also stole our cities,” Ukrainian Vice President Kyrylo Tymoshenko denounced at the end of a visit to Kherson.
