The Government defends the reduction of external dependence on fertilizers in the European Union

The Government defended this Monday the adoption of a new approach, at a European level, in terms of fertilizers, which allows, in the medium term, the reduction of external dependence.

The Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries of the European Union, which took place this Monday, November 21 in Brussels, discussed the availability and accessibility of fertilizers in the European Union,” the Ministry of Agriculture said in a statement.

In this context, a new approach to fertilizers was discussed, in order to reduce the dependence on external factors.

According to the same note, the Minister of Agriculture, Maria do Céu Antunes, said that the approach in question is present in the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy (PEPAC) and that it will contribute, “in the medium term”, to reduce dependency external fertilizer.

The Government indicated that, given the “cyclical difficulties” faced by farmers, Initiatives are needed “with significant short-term effects, which allow the maintenance of the activity”????????

Given the uncertainty in the agricultural market, the Minister of Agriculture said that exceptional measures should be used, at the European level, whenever necessary.

“We must not stop considering, in the long term, the realization of common purchases of factors of production”, defended Maria do Céu Antunes.

Portugal and 15 other Member States signed a document on the role of fertilizers in food security.

The European Commission also called for the need to explore the potential of algae as a renewable resource.

Maria do Céu Antunes pointed out the need for growth in this sector, through the creation of jobs, but also from an economic and environmental point of view.

The head of the Agriculture portfolio also said that algae are an “inescapable asset” in the food sector, which, according to her, is especially relevant at a time when the world population has exceeded 8,000 million people. .
