Do you remember the nun who won La Voz Italiana? She left the convent and is now a waitress in Spain: “I followed my heart”

Cristina Scuccia surprised Italians (and the world) when, in 2014, she participated in The Italian Voice. The interpretation of “No One” by Alicia Keys, the then nun of the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of the Holy Family in Milan, turned all four chairs around and received loud applause. Subsequently, she became a phenomenon on Youtube with her performance surpassing 110 million views.

Originally from Sicily, Cristina Scuccia won the music contest later released an album of it covers of songs like “Like a Virgin”, by Madonna, or “Price Tag”, by Jessie J, which achieved considerable success. By the way, the nun even gave a copy to Pope Francis.

After all this success, the nun ended up leaving the media map, despite having still published an album of originals in 2018. Now, eight years after making herself known, Cristina Scuccia gave an interview in which she appears very different: instead of the typical habit, the now 33-year-old woman appeared with a dress. red. And also without glasses and with a nose ring.

“I chose to follow my heart without thinking about what people said about me,” said Cristina Scuccia in an interview with talk show Verissimo, announcing that she had left the convent a year ago and headed for Spain, where she found work as a waitress, always “with a smile”. “I took a leap of faith,” she confessed, adding that a psychologist helped her make that decision.

The former nun indicated that she “believes that it is necessary to listen to the heart with courage.” “Change is a sign of evolution, but it is always difficult because it is easier to settle for certainties than to question ourselves,” she pointed out. Despite having left the convent, Cristina Scuccia is still a believer: “In fact, I believe even more in life and in God, because God is life.”

Asked if the success achieved motivated the decision to leave the convent, Cristina Scuccia rejected this scenario, despite admitting that the success achieved “was not easy”. “But that was not what put my vocation in doubt. There was just an inner shift about the enormous responsibility of being a witness for God.”

In the interview, Cristina Scuccia pointed out that the decision to leave religious life was due to two reasons. The first was related to the isolation resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and the second to the death of her father. “I didn’t know who he was,” she recalled, but said she “never” questioned the existence of God. “If I look backI look back on my journey with a deep sense of gratitude.” she confided, describing her years in the Milan convent as “the best of her life.”

Regarding love and whether she will find it in the near future, Cristina Scuccia pointed out that she “believes in love”, but it is not something that is currently in her plans. “It is not a priority for me at the moment. You have to take care of yourself, love yourself, before you can love others,” she explained.
