During his visit to Lisbon, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson made controversial revelations about the alleged positions taken by some Western countries before Russia invaded Ukrainian territory. According to Johnson, France was “in denial,” Italy said it “would be unable” to help due to its reliance on Russian hydrocarbons, and Germany assumed it was better for Ukraine to “give in” than engage in a long conflict. The comments were not received favorably and the German government has already made its discontent known.

A spokesman for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday rejected the statements by the former British ruler. “I am tempted to switch to English and claim that what boris johnson said is complete nonsense“, Steffen Hebestreit began by telling journalists, but it did not stop there. “We know that the former British Prime Minister is very funny and always has a particular relationship with the truth. This case is no exception.“, he stressed, quoted by TheGuardian.

Speaking at the CNN International Summit in Lisbon, Johnson said that while Western countries now provide continued support for Ukraine, not all were convinced in the period before Russia launched the invasion, at a time when movements of the Russian troops. “At one time, the German perspective was that if [invasão] was really going to happen, which would be a disaster, so it would be better if everything ended quickly and Ukraine surrenderedhe said, according to CNN. Assuming that he understood the German position, he nevertheless assured himself that he could not support them.
