Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President of the Republic, participated this Thursday in Qatar in a conference that focused on human rights and education, one of the objectives of Sustainable Development.
The information was shared through a note from the Presidency of the Republic. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is in Doha, Qatar, where he will accompany the team in this Thursday afternoon’s game against Ghana. But soccer was not the only purpose of the trip, as the President argued this week.
“Focusing on the theme of the conference, he stressed that quality education implies its extension to all citizens, including a significant increase in access to higher education, as has happened in Portugal in recent decades, in particular the participation of women, today the majority in higher education, including doctorates”, says the note from the Presidency.
The same note stresses that this “means access for all social strata, national and non-national, including migrants and their families.”
“Quality education means freedom and inclusion, tolerance, non-discrimination, that is, for reasons of gender, ethnicity, origin, sexual orientation and, therefore, respect for Human Rights. Contributing naturally to the reduction of inequalities and the fight against poverty”, the note continues. “There is no sustainable development without quality education, without leaving anyone behind,” concludes the note from the Presidency.
Parliament this week authorized the President’s trip to Qatar, after the trip was criticized for human rights issues in that country. This week, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa defended the trip, arguing that he was also going to be in Qatar to “talk about human rights,” precisely at the conference mentioned in the President’s note.
