Saint Tome and Principe. Former speaker of parliament arrested after ‘coup attempt’

Former President of the National Assembly of Sao Tome and Principe Delphim Neves was arrested this morning, after an attack on a military barracks, meanwhile neutralized, announced this Friday the Prime Minister of Sao Tome, Patrice Trovoada.

Patrice Trovoada said that “everything indicates” that the attack took place “at the request of some personalities????????

“The General Staff informed me that they detained some people, based on statements from the first group of four [atacantes] who was arrested and neutralized. Some better known names, Arlécio Costa, are detained in the barracks and Delfim Neves is also detained in the barracks”, said the Prime Minister.

A group of men would have invaded the military headquarters of Sao Tome and Principe last night, one hostage and one seriously woundedThe attack was neutralized at dawn around 6:00 a.m., with the arrest of the elements and an investigation process has already been opened, local sources told Lusa.

According to a medical source, during the attack, a man was seriously injured due to assaultsbut it is already recovering.

The same source added that the thieves were between 21 and 24 years old and had the help of “some internal soldiersthat allowed entry to the barracks.”

Reports from Bairro Militar residents report shootings and an explosion. This morning, access to the site was blocked.
