An emergency has been declared on the small island of Ischia, off Naples, Italy, after heavy rains that hit the region last morning caused several landslides and damaged homes. The rescue teams are still on the ground, but they are already confirmed eight dead and the destruction of at least 10 buildings, writes La Repubblica. There are still more than a dozen people missing.

The region was on orange alert and heavy rain fell even around 5 am, taking the island’s inhabitants by surprise. Matteo Salvini, vice president of the Italian government, confirmed the “eight deaths” and declared “solidarity with the population affected” by the bad weather.

there are still more than a dozen missing, including a family with a baby. The remnants that reached the bottom of the island and only stopped at sea, were washed up from the mountains and left a trail of destruction in their wake.
