Spanish police locate city of origin of letters with explosives

The Madrid Police deploys a special security device in 'Operation Christmas'

Spanish police discovered that the explosive letters sent to various locations in Spain, including one that blew up the Ukrainian embassy, originated in Valladolid, a city in northwestern Spain.

According to El Mundo, the authorities investigating the case have not yet been able to determine who will be responsible for what happened —among other things because the letters were placed in common mailboxes, which makes the process difficult—, but it was possible to verify that the city Spanish was at the origin of the orders.

The six envelopes received in Spain: brown, with addressee in capital letters and homemade explosive material

The first place to receive an envelope was the Palacio de la Moncloa, the official residence of Pedro Sánchez, but the material was detected by the security teams, who try to analyze everything that arrives through X-rays. In this case, as El País also described, the material would not explode, but would cause a “sudden flame” as soon as the envelope was opened. As soon as the alert was given, security in public buildings was tightened.

Subsequently, the Ukrainian embassy in Spain also received a similar package on Wednesday. It was the only envelope that was not stopped before being opened by one of the embassy workers, who ended up with an injury to one of his hands.

That same day a new envelope appeared at the headquarters of the Instalaza company, in Zaragoza. In this case, the recipient was the director of the company, which is the manufacturer of the C-90 grenade launchers that the Ministry of Defense sent to Ukraine.

This Thursday morning, around four o’clock in the morning, the Spanish authorities received a new alert: a new explosive package had been detected at the Torrejón de Ardoz air base in Madrid, whose addressee was the European Satellite Center of the Union. This place is also a military base that transmits information to Ukraine and no injuries were reported.

The last envelope arrived on Thursday at the US embassy in the capital of the neighboring country. Also in this case, the characteristics, said the Ministry of the Interior, are similar to those previously registered.
