Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has refused to be hospitalized despite the worsening of his state of health in recent days, the German newspaper Bild reported Thursday. According to the publication, the former head of the Catholic Church, a German national, asked to stay at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery, in the Vatican gardens, where he has lived since he resigned from the pontificate in 2013.
Benedict XVI, 95, is in the monastery accompanied by his personal secretary, the German Archbishop Georg Gänswein, and four lay women from the Memores Domini movement, of the Fraternity of Communion and Liberation, who take care of the house where the former Pope resides.
According to Bild, the monastery is equipped with all the necessary medical equipment to care for Benedict XVI, which is why the former pontiff refused hospitalization in a health unit. The latest Vatican communiqué, by the way, stated that Benedict XVI had spent Thursday night accompanied by doctors in the monastery.
Benedict XVI is “very sick”, says Pope Francis, who asks for a “special prayer” for the pope emeritus
