The number of new asylum applications filed in the European Union (EU) increased by 66% (59,870) in October 2022, to 99,175, compared to the same month of the previous year, according to data released today by Eurostat.
Compared to September, there were 8,630 new asylum applications in October, which represented an increase of 10%.
According to the EU statistics service, Syrians remain the main asylum seekers (18,420 new applications), followed by Afghan citizens (13,695) and Turkish citizens (6,770).
Germany was the EU member state that received the most asylum applications in October (24,910, 25% of the EU total), followed by Austria (17,745, 18%), France (13,680, 14%), Spain (10,905, 11%). ) and Italy (8,385, 8%).
