Twitter introduced a new policy Wednesday that prohibits “violent speech” on its platform, though the rules closely resemble those in place before Elon Musk took control of the company.
Among the updates is a ban on “encoded language” used to indirectly incite violence.
It also prohibits “threats to destroy civilian homes and shelters or infrastructure that is essential to daily, civic, or business activities.”
The news comes as the San Francisco-based company prepares to Comply with new European Union standardsIt will go into effect this fall.

But Twitter already had a version of this rule in its manual in October 2021, a year before Musk. buy the company for $44 billion. The previous rule enacted a “zero tolerance policy against violent threats. Those who post violent threats face immediate and permanent suspension of their accounts.”
But of course, policies are only as good as their implementation. After losing most of its workforce, through collective layoffs and voluntary departuresit is not clear that Twitter can force its users to comply with its rules.
