57% of Portuguese see Russia as a “rival”

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Europe has decided, almost with one voice, to unequivocally support Ukraine and condemn the Kremlin. After a year, this support remainsshows a survey published this Thursday by group of experts European Council on Foreign Relations, with the participation of citizens from ten European countries (Portugal included). But there are some differences compared to the same opinion study carried out in May 2022, and a highlight for the Portuguese respondents for being the ones who most fear the escalation of the conflict to the nuclear plan, although this fear has softened in the face of the study. former.

One of the differences between the two surveys, carried out nine months apart, is the idea that the majority of Europeans believe that Russia is weaker than before the conflict. This results in more people supporting a long warseeing as likely the possibility that the Ukrainian forces would emerge victorious.

However, not all Europeans think so, including the Portuguese: 33% of those polled in Portugal prefer that the conflict “end as soon as possible”, even if it means that “Ukraine has to cede territories to Russia”. On the other hand, 28% of the Portuguese respondents believe that kyiv should “regain all the territory”, even though this could mean “a long war”. And 23% choose not to choose between either of these two options.
