Fact review. Are the images showing Donald Trump being detained by the police real?

The quick answer is no, they are not true. The photos that began on Twitter, as a joke, went around social networks and, of course, there are those who question whether they are true.

Donald Trump runs, runs, but the American police finally catch up with him. Everything is exposed in images, which circulate on social networks, and which show, in the end, the former president of the United States being tagged by the police and then being arrested and taken by force.

Trump envisioned a similar scenario. On Saturday, March 18th, he said he believed he was going to be arrested the following Tuesday (which he did not) on suspicion that he had made a secret payment to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels not to discuss an extramarital affair. The police authorities of several American cities ended up reinforcing the alert levels this Tuesday, March 21, for fear of violent demonstrations, as occurred during the invasion of the Capitol, on January 6, 2021.

A week later, on Thursday, March 30, Donald Trump became the first US President (since leaving office) to be the subject of a criminal indictment. The New York Times wrote that, in the coming days, the Public Ministry will speak with the former head of state’s lawyers to agree on the details of how the accusation will be formalized and how Trump can be heard in New York in the context. of this process — the hearing is now scheduled for Tuesday, April 4.

Some of the photos shared on Facebook

And the photos? For starters, Trump has yet to be arrested, which immediately indicates that they must be false (it is not even guaranteed that the former president will be arrested and the fact that the investigation does not include violent crimes could rule out that possibility, if Trump collaborates with justice and agrees to transfer him to New York).

Also, it is easy to find the source of these images. On March 20, journalist Eliot Higgins, founder of Bellingcat, an investigative journalism website, had fun with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program creating photos of the arrest of Donald Trump. “Taking photos of Trump being arrested while I wait for Trump to be arrested,” he wrote on Twitter.

The next day, March 21, the prank continued, this time with photos of Trump in jail. “Meanwhile, in Trump’s AI world,” wrote about the new images.

The images became so viral that Higgins even gave interviews about what happened, after several North American newspapers called attention to his creations.

Conclusion

FAKE. The images were created by an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program and when they were first shared on Twitter, it was assumed to be so. Then, social networks began to work and many users were left wondering if the highly realistic photos were true. Are not.
