One of the leaders of the extremist group Islamic State-Khorasan (IS-K), involved in the attack on the Kabul airport as the US army withdrew from Afghanistan, has been assassinated by the Taliban regime.
A White House spokesman said the mastermind behind the suicide bombing, which killed at least 173 people at Kabul airport in August 2021, was killed by the Taliban regime.
The man was one of the leaders of the extremist group Islamic State-Khorasan (EI-K), “directly involved in the preparation of operations” terrorists in Afghanistan, said in a statement, the spokesman for the United States Security Council, John Kirby. , without adding identity, circumstances or date of death.
“He was killed during a Taliban operation. We make it clear that it is responsibility [do governo afegão] not allow terrorists, whether from [rede terrorista] Al-Qaida or IS-K, find refuge” in Afghanistan, Kirby added.
According to the Associated Press news agency, citing officials who asked not to be named, the leader was killed during a series of battles between the Taliban and IS-K earlier this month in southern Afghanistan.
Among the victims of the attack on August 26, 2021 were 13 US soldiers, who were guarding one of the gates of the Kabul airport at a time when crowds of Afghans were trying to leave the country and the Taliban had seized power.
The Afghan Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in 2021 following the chaotic withdrawal of US and NATO troops after 20 years of war.
How in just three months the Taliban managed to enter Kabul and overthrow the Afghan government
The United States Department of Defense believes that Afghanistan has once again become an international terrorist coordination center, in two years of Taliban rule, unable to stop the resurgence of the Islamic State (IS) group.
A new series of classified documents from the Pentagon (Department of Defense), released on Saturday, indicates that the EI is planning, with the participation of the branchAfghan action, attacks against Europe and Asia and wants to do the same in the United States.
The Taliban regime considers IS a terrorist organization and, since August 2021, has launched some operations against the group’s hideouts, without, however, being able to prevent several attacks.
