The Pope thanks the local church of Budapest for welcoming the Ukrainians

Pope Francis listened to the testimonies of Ukrainians who fled the war to Hungary and thanked the way, “not only with generosity, but with enthusiasm”, with which the Church of this country welcomed them.

Pope Francis today listened to testimonies from Ukrainians who fled the war to Hungary and thanked the way, “not only generously, but with enthusiasm”, with which the Church in this country welcomed them.

Pope Francis was today in a meeting with refugees and the poor in the Church of Saint Elisabeth, in Budapest, during his second day of visit to the country.

Ukrainian and Pakistani refugees went to this church to listen to the Pope, where dozens of poor and gypsy families supported by the local Caritas were also present, according to the Spanish news agency Efe.

Regarding the charity of the Church, the Pope said: “It is not enough to give the bread that feeds the stomach, it is necessary to feed the hearts of the people! Charity is not a simple material and social assistance, but cares about the whole person and wants to put him back on his feet with the love of Jesus: a love that helps to recover beauty and dignity.

“Brothers and sisters, I encourage you to always speak the language of charity,” Francis concluded.

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians who fled the war have passed through this country, although only about 35,000 have applied for temporary protection status to stay, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

Also today, the Pope made a private visit to the Blessed Laszlo Batthyany-Strattamann Institute, which welcomes children with visual impairment, motor difficulties or special educational needs, in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
