The Turkish president made the announcement in a television interview. The jihadist leader will have been “neutralized” in Syria. Türkiye is committed to continuing the fight against terrorism.
The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, announced this Sunday that the “presumed head” of the Islamic State jihadist group has been “neutralized” this Saturday in Syria, in an operation carried out by the Turkish intelligence services.
“The presumed leader of Daesh, code name Abou Hussein al-Qourachi, was neutralized during an operation carried out yesterday [sábado] by MIT (Russian secret services) in Syria”, declared the Turkish head of state in a television interview.
As the BBC writes, Abou Hussein al-Qourachi is believed to have taken the reins of the group after his predecessor died in February, making him the fourth leader of the terror organization.
In the same interview, Erdogan said that Turkish services had been following the jihadist group’s leader for a long time and vowed that Turkey would continue its “fight against terrorist organizations.” On Twitter, he posted the same statement.
