Mint authorized to mint two commemorative coins to celebrate WYD 2023 and for peace

Imprensa Nacional — Casa da Moeda will be able to mint two commemorative two-euro coins this year, one for the “World Youth Day 2023” (WYD) and another called “A coin for Peace”, according to an ordinance published this Tuesday.

“The search for peace must be a collective ambition in which each one assumes their part for the sake of the common benefit. In this sense, the minting of a coin that marks that invaluable asset and meeting point that is peace is justified. In 2023, World Youth Day will meet in Lisbon, a meeting of young people from all over the world and from all confessions, instituted by Pope John Paul II in 1985, through which it seeks to promote peace, unity and the brotherhood between peoples and nations of the whole world, universal principles that justify the minting of a commemorative coin”read in the preamble of the ordinance.

The diploma was published this Tuesday in Diário da República and authorizes the National Printing House — Casa da Moeda (INCM) to “within the volume of issuance of metallic coins approved by the European Central Bank, to mint, in the year 2023, two commemorative issues of the 2 (euros) coin”.

The coins can be minted with a normal finish or a special finish, with a limit of 7,500 coins in each of the finishes up to one limit of 1.03 million euros for the peace coin and 2.03 million euros for the WYD2023 commemorative coin.

As established by ordinance peace commemorative coin It will have in the center “the armillary sphere and around it a 16-pointed star formed by the word «PEACE» inscribed in the 16 official languages ​​of the 20 countries that make up the Euro Zone”.
