The ministers of the European Union try to reach an agreement on the reform of the European migration policy

Meeting in Luxembourg, the relevant European ministers will discuss the new Pact on Migration and Asylum, proposed by the European Commission in September 2022.

The interior ministers of the European Union (EU) will try this Thursday to reach an agreement on the reform of the European migration policy, to start negotiations with the European Parliament on issues such as the relocation of immigrants and financing.

Meeting in Luxembourg, the relevant European ministers will discuss the new Pact on Migration and Asylum, proposed by the European Commission in September 2022, for a comprehensive European approach to migration aimed at enhancing cooperation with countries of origin and transit and ensuring the efficiency of procedures, the successful integration of refugees and the return of those who do not have the right to remain.

The pact defines improved and faster procedures across the asylum and migration system and strikes a balance for fair sharing of responsibility and solidarity in order to better manage migration in the EU.

The objective of the current Swedish rotating presidency of the Council of the EU is to reach an agreement, preferably already this Thursday, on two fundamental files for migration, the regulation on the asylum and migration management system and the regulation on the procedure of asylum, so that later the structure that brings together the Member States can start negotiations with the European Parliament.

European sources said that this Interior Council is “a real opportunity” to reach a first consensus on the reform of European migration policy, after “several not very successful attempts.”

“There is a good chance, but it all comes down to whether there is enough confidence and political will on the part of member states and ministers to reach an agreement. [mas] maybe yes,” they said.

European sources pointed out that there is currently in the EU “a much more comprehensive and methodical approach to asylum and migration”, more supportive of the countries that are at the forefront, although there are also new “national dimensions” on this “delicate subject”, of migrations.

Under this new Pact on Migration and Asylum, the European Commission wants to make solidarity mandatory, through faster and more effective procedures, a fair distribution of responsibilities and financing, flexible contributions from countries, partnerships with third countries and even a system common return of the EU.

The objective of the co-legislators is to reach a final agreement (given the necessary negotiation process) for the European elections in June 2024, to share responsibilities equally among the Member States and act in solidarity against migratory flows.
