A Spanish citizen, director of a non-governmental organization, died in Ukraine as a result of a Russian attack that hit the vehicle in which she was traveling, the Spanish Government reported, cited by the Europa Press agency.
In statements to the media in New Delhi, where he is attending the G20 summit, the current Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, stated that the Spanish Government had received “verbal confirmation” of the death of Emma Igual, director of Road to Relief, which, since 2022, helps evacuate civilians from the front lines in Ukraine and delivers humanitarian aid to areas most affected by the war.
The Spanish minister added that Madrid is still waiting for “a certified confirmation from the Ukrainian authorities.”
Road to Relief had already published on the social network Instagram that the vehicle in which four members of its team were traveling had been hit in a Russian attack that occurred on Saturday morning.
The team of four aid workers (a German, a Swede, a Canadian and Spanish Emma Igual) traveled from Sloviansk to Bakhmut to assess the needs of civilians caught in the ongoing crossfire in the town of Ivanivske, in the Donetsk region. .
The organization reported, at the time, that the first two were injured and that the third died, but did not know what had happened to Emma Igual.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 of last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since the Second World War (1939-1945) and in the last 18 months caused a high number of victims, not only military but also civilians, impossible to count as long as the conflict continues.
The invasion, justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin with the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for the security of Russia, was condemned by most of the international community, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and imposing political and sanctions on Russia. economic.
Ukraine’s Western allies have supplied weapons to kyiv and passed successive sanctions packages against Russian interests to try to diminish Moscow’s ability to finance the war effort.
