British intelligence said Thursday that the Russian military is trying to surround the town of Avdiikva, the epicenter of fighting in recent weeks in the eastern province of Donetsk.

“During last week, Russian forces continued to attack villages around the disputed town of Adviivka.“, stated the secret services, emphasizing that “it is almost certain that Russia is trying to make a pincer movement to surround the city.”

The city of Avdiikva, located in eastern Ukraine, was the scene of fighting “for almost a decade”, as it “has political importance for Russia due to its proximity to the city of Donetsk”, according to a statement published by the British Ministry. defense on social network X.

“Recent advances have likely brought Russian forces closer to the Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant, an industrial complex that produces coke and a variety of chemicals and occupies a key tactical position north of the city,” they explained.

In this sense, the British Ministry of Defense specified that the facility “overlooks the main road to Avdiivka” and indicated that if Russian forces captured it it would harm Ukraine’s ability to supply the city.

“However, the industrial facility gives Ukraine a localized defensive advantage and Russian forces are likely to suffer significant personnel losses if they attempt to assault the facility,” the ministry warned.
