More than 400 migrants arrived in Lampedusa in the last 48 hours

Around 438 migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa in the last 48 hours. Authorities expect around 200 migrants to be transferred to other locations.

A total of 438 migrants arrived in the last 48 hours on the Italian island of Lampedusa, where the good weather recorded in recent days led to the arrival of several boats from the coasts of Tunisia and Libya.

In the early hours of this morning the authorities recorded the arrival in Lampedusa of four ships with 166 people on boardwhich is added to the 272 who had entered the island on Saturday, according to local media reports, cited by Efe.

Authorities expect around 200 migrants to be transferred to other locations this Sunday, leaving around 250 people in the first reception center on Lampedusa.

The last boat that arrived this Sunday in Lampedusa had left Sfax (Tunisia) with people from Bangladesh and Guinea-Conakry, and was located by an NGO boat that notified a Coast Guard patrol boat, which took them ashore. .

The remaining migrants, including women and minors, said they came from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Gambia, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal, and told rescuers they paid between 500 and 600 euros to travel.

These arrivals are in addition to the 87 people rescued on Friday night by the Italian NGO Emergency, who were found adrift, without food or water, about 20 hours after leaving the Libyan coast.

In this case, the Italian authorities indicated the port of Naples for disembarkation. The arrival of immigrants to Italy decreased in the first months of 2024, and from the beginning of the year until May 3, the entry of 16,196 people was recorded, below the 42,404 registered in the same period last year, according to data from the Italian Ministry of Internal Administration.
