At least two prison guards were taken hostage by members of the Islamic State jihadist organization in a detention center in the Rostov region, southern Russia.

Security forces managed to free two guards who had been kidnapped this Sunday by six prisoners during a riot in a prison in the city of Rostov, the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service reported.

“The criminals were murdered. The guards who had been taken hostage were released and are safe,” the Russian Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) said in a statement.

Emergency services sources cited by the Interfax news agency said the kidnappers had demanded a car and permission to leave the prison as a condition for releasing the hostages.

According to the official TASS agency, these are six inmates linked to the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS), sentenced in December 2023 to 18 years in prison for various terrorism crimes, in particular for preparing a car attack. rigged against the Supreme Court of Justice of the Russian Republic of Karachaevo-Circassia.
