Mount Fuji with new restrictions starting Monday to control tourism

The maximum access limit to this trail is now 4,000 tourists per day. Mount Fuji attracts more than 220,000 visitors each summer.

Visits to Mount Fuji in Japan will be subject to new restrictions, including a fee, starting Monday, at the start of the summer season, in an attempt to control overtourism.

Starting early Monday, tourists wishing to use the Yoshida Trail will have to pay a fee of 2,000 yen, or about 11.60 euros.

The maximum access limit to this trail is now 4,000 tourists per day. Mount Fuji attracts more than 220,000 visitors each summer.

To control this flow of migrants and its environmental impact, the authorities introduced, for the first time, an online reservation system.

Last week, four people died while climbing Mount Fuji. Many tourists climb the mountain at night to watch the sunrise from the summit, which is 3,776 metres high.

Some visitors sleep on the trails, light fires to stay warm, or try to complete the trail without taking breaks.
