By a vote of six to three, with six conservative judges against three progressives, the Court held that “the President does not enjoy any immunity for unofficial acts,” but “is entitled to at least a presumption of immunity for official acts.”
Donald Trump, campaigning to return to the White House, immediately welcomed the decision, calling it a “great victory” for democracy.
The Supreme Court’s decision is likely to delay Trump’s trial in Washington on federal election subversion charges because it goes against an appeals court ruling in February that found Trump did not have immunity for alleged crimes he committed while still president following the 2020 presidential election results.
