  • Netanyahu may be signaling willingness to accept Palestinian governance in post-war Gaza

Publicly, Benjamin Netanyahu has in recent months ruled out the possibility of Palestinian management of Gaza after the war. However, according to The Times of Israel, in private, the Israeli prime minister is likely to be more open to this possibility.

In recent weeks, three officials told the Israeli newspaper, Netanyahu’s office has been backtracking on its opposition to the involvement of people linked to the Palestinian Authority in the administration of Gaza following Israel’s war with Hamas.

According to The Times of Israel, top advisers to the Israeli prime minister have concluded that people with “connections” to the Palestinian Authority may be the “only viable option” for Israel, if the country wants to “rely” on “local Palestinian authorities” to manage matters relating to civilians in Gaza at the end of the war.

A spokesman for Netanyahu’s office, contacted for comment on the information provided by the three sources, referred the Israeli newspaper to public statements by the Israeli government, which opposes Palestinian governance in Gaza.
