‘Immense pride and boundless enthusiasm’: Nancy Pelosi officially endorses Kamala Harris’ candidacy

Pelosi, one of the figures who behind the scenes called on President Joe Biden to step aside from the presidential race, announced her support for Kamala Harris’ candidacy for the presidency of the United States.

Former US House Speaker and Democratic Party powerhouse Nancy Pelosi on Monday announced her support for Kamala Harris to replace Joe Biden in the presidential election.

“It is with immense pride and boundless enthusiasm for the future of our country that I endorse the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States.”Pelosi wrote in a message on social media X.

“I have witnessed Kamala Harris’ strength and courage as a champion for working families, especially fighting for a woman’s right to choose. I have personally known Kamala Harris for decades because she is rooted in strong values, faith, and commitment to public service,” Pelosi added, expressing confidence that the current vice president can beat Republican Donald Trump.

According to the American press, Pelosi was one of the figures who behind the scenes asked President Joe Biden to step away from the presidential race, having praised the way in which he ended up announcing that decision.

However, she has not yet commented on the alternative candidacy of Kamala Harris. “In the Democratic Party, our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power,” Pelosi concluded.

According to a tally compiled by AP, less than 24 hours after US President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race, Harris has secured the support of more than 700 delegates who have confirmed they will vote for her at the Democratic National Convention, which will be held in Chicago from August 19 to 22. This number of delegates represents more than a third of those needed to confirm the nomination.

After several weeks of pressure, including from several senior figures in the Democratic establishment, Biden gave in and decided on Sunday to drop out of the race for re-election, justifying the decision in the interest of the Democratic Party and the country.

Shortly after announcing his withdrawal, the US president declared his “full support” for Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate for the November 5 election.

Harris thanked the support and accepted the challenge of starting the campaign to become the Democratic candidate and face the Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump.
