Climate activists sat on the runways and glued themselves to the tarmac of the airport. They want to put an end to the use of oil and coal. Operations are resuming “gradually”.
Frankfurt Airport in Germany has temporarily suspended flights after climate activists glued themselves to the tarmac of airplane runways, preventing them from taking off.
As Reuters writes, the airport even warned passengers on social network X not to go to the airport. That message is no longer available on the page, but there is now an update stating that “due to a police operation” air traffic had to be “temporarily suspended,” adding that “air operations are currently being gradually resumed.”
Passengers are therefore advised to confirm the status of their flight on the respective airline’s website before heading to the airport.

Reuters cites a statement from activists with the group Última Generación, which says six environmentalists managed to break through a fence and reach various points at Frankfurt airport, carrying signs reading: “Oil kills.” The group also circulated images showing activists wearing reflective vests and sitting on airplane runways, or with their hands glued to the asphalt.

On the social network X, the group adds that a “coordinated protest” has been taking place since Wednesday at several airports, in European cities but also in Canada. These activists want the German government to work towards an agreement that plans to end the use of oil and coal by 2030.
