Livre spoke out against the “racist and xenophobic attacks” taking place in the United Kingdom and called on the government to condemn the riots organised by “far-right agitators”.
On Wednesday, Livre condemned the “racist attacks” in the United Kingdom and called on the Portuguese government to “firmly condemn” these riots, recognizing the impact of extremist discourse “on social cohesion and harmonious coexistence among all people.”
In a statement, Livre recalls that several “organised groups have recently carried out attacks of racist and xenophobic violence” in the United Kingdom.
“Oh Livre vehemently condemns these acts and expresses total solidarity with the communities attacked.“, reads the text.
The party warns, however, that “these attacks do not occur in a vacuum,” denounced on social networks by “far-right agitators”and whose adherence is “based on years of normalizing divisive and dehumanizing discourse by British politicians who theoretically belong to the democratic spectrum.”

The acceptance of “this discourse by the political class, combined with the Spread of false information on social media and negative reporting bias “Through the media, it turns once-marginal ideas into concepts that are reinforced daily,” they continue in the text, arguing that the relationship “between inflammatory, nationalist and xenophobic rhetoric and the propensity to engage in racist-motivated crimes” has already been demonstrated.

Livre warns that this phenomenon is not limited to the United Kingdom and warns of the risks of not actively denouncing xenophobic and divisive discourse, “which attempts to turn vulnerable communities into scapegoats for the problems faced by the population in Portugal.”
The party also calls on the Portuguese government to “firmly condemn” the events in the United Kingdom, “recognising the impact of extremist discourse on social cohesion and harmonious coexistence between all people”.
The United Kingdom has been rocked by a series of violent riots, according to authorities, called by far-right groups, following the death of three children (one of them Portuguese) stabbed by a young British son of immigrants in Southport (northwest of England).
