Two Polish Air Force planes have been called in to ensure the safety of Polish airspace following Russian attacks on Ukrainian territory in the early hours of Monday.

In a statement published in social networkThe operational command of the Polish armed forces speaks of “intensive long-distance air activity by Russia, related to attacks on Ukrainian territory.” It adds that the last time Polish forces monitored such Russian activity was on August 27, when Polish forces reported the entry of a Russian drone into Polish airspace.

Four hours after activating the air defenses, the operational command again issued a statement on unknownwhich reinforces the intention to continue monitoring Russian activity, but ending the mission in the air. “The Polish armed forces remain constantly available to ensure the security of Polish airspace.”

Several explosions were heard in kyiv on Monday morning, directed by Russian ballistic and cruise missiles. The debris resulting from the intercepted missiles fell in different districts, causing fires in different regions. According to the mayor of the capital, Vitali Klitschko, two people were injured and non-residential buildings were damaged.

Polish Foreign Minister Rasolaw Sikorski reiterated in an interview with the Financial Times that countries sharing a border with Ukraine are “responsible for protecting their own airspace,” adding that NATO membership “does not negate the responsibility for individual protection.” However, allies have advised the Polish government to be careful when approaching unmarked air gateways, according to the Kyiv Independent.

Given the episodes of Russian “invasions” into Polish territory, Sikorski and a large part of the Polish population (according to a survey conducted by the Rzeczpospolita newspaper) believe that all Russian air targets entering Polish airspace should be shot down. “When hostile missiles are heading towards our airspace, I consider shooting them down to be self-defense, because when they cross the border, the risk of the debris injuring someone is significant,” Sikorski concluded.
