The Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region began on August 6, but Russia had been suspicious of kyiv’s aims last year and tried unsuccessfully to stop Ukraine’s plans. The information was reported on Friday by The Guardian newspaper, which had access to documents that Ukraine says it has seized in the Kursk region.

These documents reveal that the first warnings were given by the Russian military command at the end of December 2023 and the latest information is from the end of June. just six weeks before the Ukrainian incursion. Taken from one of the buildings of the Russian Interior Ministry, one of the confidential documents, which Ukrainian soldiers are said to have obtained at the end of August, points to the attempted occupation of the Russian town of Sudzha, which has been under Ukrainian control since last month.

In January, Moscow will have given Hints of a “potential advance on the border” by Ukrainian soldiers. What’s more, orders were given on January 4 to step up training of Russian soldiers in preparation for a possible attack. Then, in February, Russian commanders signaled that Ukraine might be attempting an incursion through the Sumy region, potentially advancing as far as 80 kilometers into Russian territory “to create a corridor four days before the arrival of the main units of the Ukrainian army in armored vehicles.”

But in June even more specific warnings began to be issued, pointing to a possible Ukrainian plan “with the aim of controlling Sudzha,” which actually occurred on August 6. and even possible Destruction of a bridge over the Seym River as indicated in the now revealed documents, and the three bridges that allowed passage across this river were destroyed.

In addition to warnings, the documents carried by Ukrainian soldiers also reveal Russia’s tactical concerns. One example shows the need to create trenches to avoid Ukrainian drones and even the creation of “mannequin soldiers,” which “must move frequently” to “confuse Ukrainian drones.”

The advance on Kursk has set off alarm bells in Russia, and on Thursday the Ukrainian president said that this incursion has already forced Russia to divert 40,000 troops from the east to this region.

Given the sensitivity of the issue, The Guardian stresses that it was not possible to independently verify the authenticity of the documents, although it confirms the markings of official Russian military communications.
