Angola wants to increase access to electricity for half of the population by 2027

Currently, Angola has access rates to electricity and drinking water at levels of 44 and 56%, despite significant investments already made.

The Angolan government wants to increase the rate of access to electricity to 50% by 2027, which corresponds to 16 million people, said the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges, on Friday.

“Reaching the goal of 50% access to the electricity rate represents the achievement of More than 1,250 thousand new home connections “throughout the country,” reads a government statement, which reports on the minister’s announcement made during the 13th Energy and Water Consultative Council, which is taking place in Luanda.

“Currently, Angola has access tariffs for electricity and drinking water at levels of 44 and 56%, despite the significant investments already made,” the statement added.

According to the governor, “It is crucial that the sector becomes increasingly more capable and better “guarantee the sustainability of the activity it carries out, which implies having the effective capacity to maintain existing infrastructure, compliance with good practices in public management, efficiency in income management, adequate technical capacity of the technical staff of companies and institutes, among other conditions” , also reads the text sent to Lusa.

João Baptista Borges reported that a set of projects are being implemented in the Water sector, evaluated in more than 500 million dollarsaround 447 million euros, which includes the rehabilitation and modernization of water supply systems in several localities in the country, the institutional training of provincial water and sanitation companies and the design of sanitation systems in seven coastal cities, among others.

The Advisory Council meeting ended at the Venâncio de Moura Diplomatic Academy, under the motto “Energy and Water, challenges and solutions for the expansion and sustainability of the sector”, and discussed ideas and solutions for the future of the Energy and Water sector in the country.
