“If anyone comes into my house, they will be shot.” This was one of the most striking quotes from Kamala Harris’s latest campaign rally. The US presidential candidate spoke to Oprah Winfrey at a rally broadcast on YouTube, which included the participation of Hollywood figures such as Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep and Chris Rock. “I probably shouldn’t have said that. My team will deal with it later,” the current vice president of the United States continued, laughing.
Harris’s statement came at a time when the issue of gun ownership was being debated. Donald Trump, Kamala’s opponent, is in favor of fewer restrictions on gun ownership and, consequently, easier access to gun ownership, while the Democratic candidate is going in the opposite direction and advocating more rigorous background checks for those who carry them.
Kamala said that like her, Tim Walz, the Democratic candidate for vice president of the United States, is a gun owner and that they are trying to find a middle ground on this issue. “I think for too long, when it comes to the issue of gun violence, some people have been imposing a really false choice, saying that either you are for the Second Amendment or you want to take away everyone’s guns,” she said. “I am for the Second Amendment,” which protects the right to own guns, “and I am for the ban on assault weapons, universal background checks and red flag laws,” she added.
