Thousands of French people have demonstrated on Place de la Bastille in Paris to protest against the dismissal of French President Emmanuel Macron and the appointment of Prime Minister Michel Barnier.
“Macron, dismiss Macron”, “Macron, the youth took to the streets”, “Strike, blockade, Macron in prison”, “Resistance” and “We are all anti-fascists” are some of the slogans chanted by thousands of demonstrators at the start of the protest scheduled for 2:00 p.m. local time (1:00 p.m. in Lisbon).
Although so far without much fuss, but with a large police presence, the demonstration, organized by several unions and associations of students, environmentalists and feminists, filled the Parisian square and several posters took up positions against the “Macron-Barnier government”, two weeks after Macron’s appointment of the new Prime Minister.
The protesters, organised mainly in lively groups, are expected to march for around two kilometres to the Place de la Nation, occupying the streets of the centre of the French capital, chanting and displaying their anger as they call for “respect for the vote” in the legislative elections.
Following the dissolution of the French National Assembly and the early legislative elections on 7 July, France is experiencing a period of unprecedented political fragmentation.
The nomination of Michel Barnier, a member of the right-wing conservative Republican Party, has been highly contested following the victory, without an absolute majority, of the left-wing coalition Nova Frente Popular in the legislative elections.
