Who were the 12 members of Hezbollah’s elite troops that Israel eliminated?

Wahbi was the leader of Radwan’s military operations from the start of the conflict until earlier this year. He was head of the group’s training unit and was killed in the attack in Beirut on Friday.

After confirming the death of Radwan unit chief Ibrahim Aqil, Hezbollah announced early Saturday the death of a second senior commander, Ahmed Mahmoud Wahbi, known as Abu Hussein Samir, a victim of Friday’s Israeli attack in Beirut’s southern suburbs that killed at least 15 Hezbollah soldiers, a number the group has given away, including 11 members of the group’s elite Radwan troops.

Hezbollah claimed that Wahbi was the leader of the elite Radwan unit’s military operations from the start of the conflict on October 7, 2023, until earlier this year. According to the group, as cited by the Times of Israel, Wahabi was the head of the group’s training unit and a former commander of the Radwan Force, which led fighting against Israel until earlier this year. The IDF claims that Wahbi belonged to the group of those planning an invasion of the Galilee by Hezbollah, and that he was also involved in “advancing Hezbollah’s entrenchment in southern Lebanon, while attempting to improve the organization’s ground combat capabilities.”

An IDF infographic shows the top commanders of Hezbollah’s Radwan Force who were killed in the attack in Beirut on September 20.

Over the years, and during the early months of the war, the military says Wahbi was involved in planning and carrying out rocket attacks. Like other Hezbollah officials, Wahbi was also involved in fighting for the Assad regime in Syria during the civil war.

On Saturday, the IDF released an infographic showing the faces and names of the top Radwan Force commanders who were killed in the attack in Beirut on Friday: Mohammad Al-Attar, commander of the training department, Hassan Abad Alssatar, head of operations, Hussein Dahraj, chief of the General Staff, Abdullah Hajazi, commander of the Ramim Ridge region, Abu Samir, head of the training unit, Mahmoud Hamad, senior operations commander, Abbas Maslamani, commander of the Qana region, Samer Halawi, commander of the coastal region, Muhammad Reda, commander of the Jiam region, Hassan Madi, commander of the Mount Dov region, and Hassan Hussein, commander of the special forces of the Aziz unit.

“These commanders led and organized for years a plan for the Radwan Force to attack and infiltrate Israeli territory, which would be executed when the order was given,” the army said, as quoted by the Times of Israel. “Aqil and the commanders eliminated in the attack were responsible for planning, advancing and executing hundreds of terror operations against Israel, including organizing Hezbollah’s murderous plan to invade communities in the Galilee,” the IDF added.

The Islamist Hamas movement on Saturday mourned the death of Aqil and guaranteed that Israel would pay a “heavy price” for the attack. “This crime committed by the occupation [israelita] It is a reckless act for which he will pay a high price, and the blood of the martyred leader Ibrahim Aqil […] “This will be the flame that will envelop this artificial entity,” he said in a statement quoted by the Lusa agency.

Before publishing the infographic on Saturday, Hezbollah had already confirmed the deaths of Mohammad Ahmad Rida, known as Abu Ali Neinawah, born in 1986 in the southern Lebanese city of Anqoun, and Mohammad Kassem Al-Attar, known as Abu Yasser Al-Attar, born in 1973 in the Lebanese city of Al-Charbine.
