The Mobility Agreement within the CPLP is a “strategic pillar” of immigration policy

The Prime Minister considers the CPLP that the mobility agreement is a “strategic pillar” of Portuguese immigration policy, since it has a preferential relationship with Portuguese-speaking countries.

The Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, considered this Monday in Lisbon that the mobility agreement between the member states of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) “is a strategic and structuring pillar” of immigration policy in Portugal.

Montenegro, who spoke at a press conference at the end of a meeting with his Timorese counterpart, Xanana Gusmão, highlighted that this mobility agreement “It is fully operational and has not had any changes” that his government took office.

“There have been no changes since we took office. AND It is a strategic pillar It is part of our immigration policy that we have a preferential relationship with countries that speak our language. This does not mean excluding anyone, or any position of xenophobia, as some more distracted or hasty people sometimes want us to believe,” he stressed.

“This means that the integration in Portugal of citizens from countries that, as has been well demonstrated here, assimilate our culture, our language, our history, our way of being and being, are naturally countries that, from the beginning, have good reception and integration conditions,” he added.

For Luís Montenegro, the mobility agreement signed within the CPLP “It is a good agreement for Portugal and it is a good agreement for all the other countries”.

Before the press conference, Portugal and East Timor signed three cooperation agreements: the Strategic Cooperation Program 2024-2028, the cooperation agreement in the field of infrastructure and the Cooperation Protocol between the Portuguese Ministry of Economy and the Ministry of Tourism of Timor. -Environment East, for the development and implementation of the Revive Program.

Xanana Gusmão, and the ministerial delegation accompanying him, will remain in Portugal until the 18th and also plans to travel to the Autonomous Region of the Azores.
