Irregular crossings of the European Union borders fall by 42% between January and September of this year

Despite the overall decline, entries increased by 192% across the Eastern European border and 100% via the West African route. The crossing of the Mediterranean to Italy registered a significant decrease.

The number of irregular entries into the European Union (EU) decreased by 42%, to 166,000, in the first nine months of the year, compared to the same period last year, according to Frontex data.

According to data from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, the routes of The Western Balkans and the central Mediterranean (for Italy) saw the biggest dropsrespectively 79%, for almost 17 thousand, and 64%, for the 47,710 irregular crossings of the external border.

On the West African route, however, detections of irregular entries increased by 100% between January and September, reaching 30,616, and on the eastern border – used by Belarus as a hybrid threat – they increased by 192%, to 13,195. .

In the Eastern Mediterranean, irregular crossings into the EU increased by 15%, to 45,610, and in the Western Mediterranean they fell by 1%, to 11,483.
