Defendants in BES case now refuse to testify in court

The 15 defendants identified this Thursday in the first session of the BES/GES trial have now refused to give statements, after having been identified in court.

GES/BES. The accused and the crimes in one of the most important cases of Justice in Portugal

Among the defendants who refused to speak and formally identified themselves was the former president of Banco Espírito Santo (BES). Ricardo Salgadothe former administrators Amílcar Morais Pires and Manuel Espírito Santo Silvathe accountant Machado da Cruzformer director of the Department of Studies, Markets and Finance (DFME) of BES Paulo Ferreiraformer member of the ESAF society Pedro Almeida Costathe former deputy director of DFME Nuño Escuderoformer head of compliance at BES João Martins Pereirathe swiss Etienne Cadosch and Michel Cretonboth linked to the company Eurofin, and former DFME employees of BES Pedro Serra and Pedro Pinto.

Also identified was the companies Rio Forte Investments, Espírito Santo Irmãos, SGPS and Eurofinthrough their legal representatives: Ana Paula Alves, Ricardo Salgado and Etienne Cadosch, respectively, who also did not provide statements.

Only the defendants Isabel Almeida, António Soares and Cláudia Boal Faria were not present in court this Tuesday.

The former president of BES, Ricardo Salgado, is the main accused of the BES/GES case and is responsible before the courts for 62 crimes, allegedly committed between 2009 and 2014.

Among the crimes charged are one of criminal association, 12 of active corruption in the private sector, 29 of qualified fraud, five of infidelity, one of market manipulation, seven of money laundering and seven of document falsification.

According to the Public Ministry, the collapse of the GES will caused losses of more than 11.8 billion euros.
