Ten Western countries ask for humanitarian aid to enter Sudan

Ten Western countries have asked for humanitarian aid to enter Sudan. The war has already cost tens of thousands of lives and displaced 11.3 million people, of whom 3 million have fled the country.

Ten countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, France and Germany, asked the two parties in the Sudan conflict this Friday to guarantee humanitarian access to millions of people in need of “urgent assistance.”

Sudan has been the scene of a war since April 15, 2023, which has already cost tens of thousands of livesbetween the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdane Daglo, and the national army, commanded by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the country’s de facto leader.

About 11.3 million people were displaced, of which almost 3 million fled Sudanaccording to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), which described the situation as a humanitarian “catastrophe.”

Around 26 million people face severe food insecurity, and famine has been declared in the Zamzam camp in Darfur.

HE “systematic obstruction”On both sides, “local and international humanitarian efforts are at the root of this famine,” the ten countries say in a joint statement.

“We condemn the fact that, despite the overwhelming urgency, the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF persist in hindering humanitarian aid,” insists the statement, which was also signed by the European Commissioner for Crisis Management.

The signatories of the declaration consider necessary “an immediate and coordinated increase in aid and full, safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to populations in need”, stressing that belligerents “have the duty to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law “.

The 10 countries specifically appeal to the lifting restrictions on crossing the border with Chad in the city of Adre and opening “all possible cross-border routes”in accordance with the commitments assumed by the two belligerent parties.

Several rounds of negotiations failed to end the fighting.

In late August, following US-hosted talks in Switzerland, both sides committed to ensuring safe and unhindered access for humanitarian personnel along two key routes.
