In a speech at the presidential palace in Maputo, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi asked that “a tragedy” not become a “trigger” to cause more suffering to others.
The president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, called this Wednesday not to make “a tragedy, which was the barbaric murder of two compatriots” a “trigger to inflict more suffering on other compatriots”, in a speech in Maputo.
“Let us not turn around a tragedy, which was the barbaric murder of two compatriots, repudiated by all Mozambicans, throughout the world, by the Government, let us not use this as a trigger to inflict more suffering on our other compatriots, who may see their daily and incessant search for their livelihood,” said the Mozambican head of state, in a speech at the presidential palace in Maputo, after receiving representatives of the country’s Ombudsman’s Office.
Nyusi stressed that Mozambican justice still does not know the motive or responsibility for the murder shooting against the lawyer of presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, Elvino Dias, and the representative of the Podemos party, Paulo Guambe, last Friday night, in the center of Maputo.
“We still don’t know what the motivation is and who is responsible. There is no need to rush to force some conclusions. Why don’t you wait? And if this is not the line we think, how will we do it? We retreat and what was destroyed will be replaced“asked the president, in reference to the demonstrations and riots that have occurred in Maputo in recent days.
“Let us wait for clarification on each of the deaths and their responsibility,” appealed the Head of State.
“Let us all remain united for our country, because the rule of law knows what respect for the laws also means. The democratic State is respect for the laws, that is democracy. “Democracy is not disobedience,” Nyusi reinforced.
After the double homicide, Venâncio Mondlane called on Monday for peaceful marches in Mozambique, which were dispersed by strong police action, with shots in the air and tear gas, and the clashes caused, according to a hospital source, at least 16 injured in Maputo.

The police response to the protests was condemned by the international community and there were several calls for restraint from both sides, namely Portugal, the European Union and the African Union.
