The preliminary results of the autopsy of the body of João Rendeiro carried out by the National Institute of Legal Medicine (INML) revealed no signs of third party intervention in the death of the former banker.
The news is advanced by the Jornal de Notícias, according to which additional tests, namely toxicological tests, must still be carried out to identify the exact cause of death.
Rendeiro’s body arrived from South Africa on Friday, having been autopsied earlier that day. Rendeiro’s widow had doubts about the causes of death, considering that there were signs of crimes, and requested that a second autopsy be performed, which, according to Jornal de Notícias, will be paid for by relatives and friends of María de Jesús Rendeiro.
The first autopsy was carried out in South Africa and revealed no signs of crime, according to South African authorities. A Lusa, María de Jesús Rendeiro’s lawyer told him that the family was not officially informed about the performance of the first autopsy or the results, so she considers that the autopsy carried out in Portugal is the first.
João Rendeiro was found dead on May 12, at the age of 69, at Westville Prison in Durban, South Africa. The former president of the BPP had been detained since December 2021, pending his extradition to Portugal.
