A gas station in the northern California city of Mendocino reportedly charges about $10 per gallon, making it the most expensive gas station in the country as fuel prices continue to rise nationwide.
$9.45 per gallon!! Thanks to Matthew for this photo of the Chevron in Mendocino, California, the best station in the country and the highest price we’ve ever recorded. That’s over $3 a gallon higher than the California average and the definite exception. #fuel price pic.twitter.com/7AUuxDLCGI

As reported by local ABC affiliate KFSN-30 in Fresno, California:
Schlafer’s Auto Repair sells regular gasoline at $9.60 per gallon.
But that’s not the worst, if your car needs a plus you’ll have to spend $9.69 and if you want something superior be prepared to pay $9.91 for just a gallon of gas.
According to GasBuddy, this is the most expensive gas in the country.
That’s higher than Tuesday’s statewide high of $6,371; The national average is $4,919, according to the American Automobile Association.
There are many reasons for the high price – for example, Mendocino’s relatively remote location and California as a whole paying a higher price due to high taxes and relative refinery shortages.
Owner Judith Schlafer told SFGate.com:
Running an independent gas station in a small town is “very hard work,” said Schlafer. He says the price he pays increases because he buys in relatively small quantities compared to major stations in the city or places like Costco and Safeway. Over the years, he said he owed up to $80,000 for the Chevron fuel he bought. I said, ‘I can’t go on like this. Now it’s pricing in 10 days to pay for a full truck.
Another factor in the high cost, he said, is that the gas station only sells gasoline and offers basic services like replacing windshield wipers and repairing brake lights. He says other stations have grocery stores. “It’s really hard to stay here in business,” Schlafer said. “I don’t have a grocery store to label food and ingredients.” He said at one point he was offered to build a convenience store at the station, but it cost $100,000. He’s gone, he said.
He said he was surprised that his own gas station was the most expensive in the country and could not afford to lower the price.
