Thousands of protesters march this Saturday through the center of London, United Kingdom, to demand the British Government, led by Boris Johnson, to take urgent measures to alleviate the increase in the cost of living, according to the Efe agency.
According to the Spanish agency, the crowd began its march towards the parliament at noon, where at the end there will be a speech by the general secretary of the British Trade Union Congress (TUC), Frances O’Grady. According to the TUC, British workers have lost around €20,000 since 2008, due to a failure to monitor wages for inflation.
The demonstrators carried banners with messages such as “Stop wars, not welfare” or “End energy poverty, insulate homes now”, while whistles, cheers and applause were heard as the blue flame marking the start of the march, according to the Efe news agency.
In the last few hours, the failure of the negotiations to lift the stoppages in the railway and metro sectors, scheduled for next week, with the aim of demanding a total improvement of working conditions in these transport sectors, was also known.
The general secretary of the Transport, Maritime and Railway (RMT) union, Mick Lynch, acknowledged that “despite the efforts in the negotiations, it was not possible to obtain a viable agreement to resolve the disputes.” As a result, closures at 13 rail operators remain scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with the London Underground affected on Tuesday.
