“It’s not a lack of ambition, it’s prudence.” Costa justifies proposal to postpone the end of combustion cars

“We cannot exert excessive pressure on families in the energy transition process,” António Costa said this Friday to justify the proposal signed by Portugal to postpone the goal of 0% CO2 emissions for five years, until 2040, which is equivalent to to the end of the sale of vehicles with combustion engines (fossil fuels). The Prime Minister explained that the position adopted in the opinion delivered to the European Commission and which has the support of five countries —Portugal, Italy, Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia— is that instead of reducing CO2 emissions by 100% by 2035, the reduction is 90%which is compatible with the maintenance of hybrid cars.

The elimination of all CO2 emissions produced by vehicles, from 2035, which implies the end of the production and sale of these cars, has been approved in the European Parliament, but it will still have to be voted by the environment and energy ministers in council next Tuesday.
