Airport: Beira Baixa Business Association points to Tancos as a solution

The president of the Beira Baixa Business Association (AEBB) pointed out this Monday to Tancos, Vila Nova da Barquinha, district of Santarém, as one of the solutions to solve the problem of the new airport structure in Portugal.

“If we look around us, we find two solutions to this problem: a list in Beja, with an international airport built and operational; the other in Tancos, “one step away” from being ready”, said Ana Palmeira de Oliveira, in a letter to the Lusa agency.

The president of the AEBB, based in Castelo Branco, highlighted that the discussion on the new location of the airport that can also serve Lisbon “it is old” and it seems “difficult to find a consensus”.

With very strategic positions and capable of responding to a more cohesive development, these solutions [Tancos e Beja] they do not replace an airport tailored to what Lisbon needs and deserves, but rather reinforce the urgent and necessary response”, he maintained.

Ana Palmeira de Oliveira stressed that the two solutions mentioned “are for continuity and not mere corrective and temporary strategies.”

“We must not ignore that the airport response solution just over an hour from the capital is already implemented in other European countries. Is Lisbon that different?” she asked.

Recently, the President of the Government, António Costa, ordered the revocation of the order that designated the municipalities of Montijo and Alcochete as the headquarters of the new airport solution for the Lisbon region, disavowing the Minister of Infrastructure, Pedro Nuno Santos, who presented this proposal .

The suggested solution was to continue with the project for a new airport in Montijo, complementary to the Humberto Delgado Airport, in Lisbon, to be operational by the end of 2026, with both to close when the Campo de Tiro de Alcochete airport was completed. predictably in 2035.

António Costa defended that the new airport solution for the Lisbon region must “work towards a technical, political, environmental and economically sustainable solution, a solution that is the subject of a national consensus, that is, with the largest opposition party”.

The president of the AEBB also questioned “if the rest of the country also deserves an opportunity to be part of the solution” and, within the scope of this strategic contribution, “still benefit from the consequent territorial development, at a business, tourism and social level” . ”.

“We cannot ignore that we are not a rich country and that the resources we have must be fully at the service of peoples and territories”, he concluded.
