NAV wants an exceptional period for night flights in Lisbon to update the control system

NAV wants to extend the flight schedule in Lisbon, for the night period, between October 18 and November 29, due to the implementation of the new Top Sky control system, a company source told Lusa.

On Wednesday, the consultation notice was published for interested parties to start the procedure for pass an ordinance allowing an exceptional regime regarding the operation of aircraft at the Humberto Delgado Airport, in Lisbon.

An official NAV source explained to Lusa that it is about extending the flight schedule in Lisbon, for the night period, not to increase the volume of traffic, but to distribute flights in more hoursthus allowing the air traffic control system to be updated as of October 18.

Thus, the idea is that the exceptional regime is in force between October 18 and November 29, explained the NAV.

Lisbon airport is under a night flight restriction regime, which establishes a limit of 91 weekly flights between 00:00 and 6:00, due to noise.

In July, the environmental association Zero denounced that the noise levels at the Lisbon airport exceed the legal limits and warned that the night flight restriction regime is also not being complied with, citing measurements made in the week that began on July 11 and that they pointed to a total of 140 movements between 00:00 and 6:00.

The Top Sky project, common to six other countries and coordinated by Eurocontrol, was presented by NAV in 2019 and foresees an investment of 103.8 million eurosuntil 2023.

The Secretary of State for Infrastructure, Hugo Mendes, signed the document published this Wednesday to publicize the start of the procedure for the creation of the exceptional regime, now giving the interested parties 10 days to pronounce themselves, after which the diploma .public consultation and will be known in greater detail.

The ordinance is being prepared by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action and, according to a source linked to the process, will include mitigation measures.
