Electricity consumption falls 0.3% in September, falling for the first time since January

Electricity consumption fell 0.3% in September, for the first time since January, and increased 2.9% in the first nine months of the year compared to the same period in 2021, the REN reported today.

According to data from REN, — Redes Energéticas Nacionais — “electricity consumption fell by 0.3% in September, which had not happened since January of this year”, and, “With correction for temperature effects and number of business days, there was a slight increase of 0.2%”.

In the accumulated until September, “consumption grew by 2.9% compared to the same period of the previous year, or 2.7% with temperature correction and business days.”

In the month of September, the productivity indices associated with renewable energies were all favorable: 1.23 (historical average equal to 1) for wind energy production, 1.06 for solar energy production and 1.24 for hydraulic energy production.

Photovoltaic production maintains a very important growth, close to 50%, related to the increase in installed power, with peaks above 1,300 MW [megawatts]”, emphasizes REN.

In September, renewable production supplied 44% of consumption and non-renewable production 35%, while the remaining 21% corresponded to imported energy.

In the accumulated from January to September, the hydroelectric producibility index registered 0.37, the wind producibility index 0.96 and the solar producibility index 1.10.

In this period, renewable production supplied 45% of consumption, divided between wind with 23%, hydro with 9%, biomass with 7% and photovoltaic with 6%. Natural gas production supplied 33% of consumption, while the remaining 22% corresponded to imported energy.

Regarding the consumption of natural gas, recorded a negative year-on-year rate of 15% in Septemberpresenting, “contrary to what was verified throughout the year, a negative behavior both in the conventional segment, which maintained the trend of recent months, with a decrease of 22%, and in the electricity production segment, which this month contracted 5%. ”.

Between January and September, the consumption of natural gas registered a negative year-on-year variation of 1.2%, as a result of a fall of 21% in the conventional segment and a growth of 38% in the electricity generation segment.
